Why the Koch Method Works Differently

Most people learn Morse code the way they learned the alphabet: from a chart. They memorize that A is dot-dash, then translate every sound they hear back through that chart in their head. The translation step feels like progress at first, and then it becomes a ceiling. Somewhere around 10 words per minute the characters arrive faster than the lookup can run, and the learner stalls — often permanently. Ham radio operators call this the plateau, and the usual advice is to push through it. There is no pushing through it. The lookup table is the problem.

In 1935, Ludwig Koch, a psychologist at the Technical University of Braunschweig, tested a different approach. Rather than slowing the characters down so students could count elements, he played every character at full operating speed from the very first session and simply reduced the number of characters in play. Students began with two. When they could copy those two reliably, a third was introduced. Koch’s widely cited result was that students reached full copying proficiency in roughly 13.5 hours of training — far faster than the chart-and-slow-down methods of the era.

The reason is that a character played at 20 WPM has a distinct rhythmic shape. K is dah-di-dah. M is dah-dah. Played fast, those are two different sounds, as different as two spoken syllables. Played slowly, they dissolve into countable beeps, and counting is exactly the habit that caps your speed later. Koch’s insight was that the fast sound is easier to learn than the slow one, because the fast sound is a single perceptual unit.

How to Use the Trainer

  1. Set your character speed first. The Character Speed slider (15–40 WPM, defaulting to 25) controls how fast the dots and dashes themselves are sent. Set this to the speed you eventually want to copy at, and then leave it alone. Lowering it later to make a hard lesson easier is the single most common way people undo their own progress.
  2. Set your effective speed to something you can survive. The Effective Speed slider (5–25 WPM, defaulting to 15) stretches the silence between characters without touching the characters themselves. This is Farnsworth timing. Beginners typically want 25 WPM characters at 8–12 WPM effective; the gaps give your brain time to name the sound before the next one arrives.
  3. Tune the sidetone. Frequency runs 300–1000 Hz, defaulting to 600 Hz. Most operators settle somewhere between 550 and 750 Hz. Pick a pitch you can listen to for twenty minutes without fatigue, and keep the volume modest — the trainer defaults to 75%.
  4. Press Play Group. A group of characters is sent from your current lesson’s character set. Group Size is adjustable from 1 to 10 and defaults to 5, matching the five-character groups used in real CW practice transmissions.
  5. Type what you heard, then press Check. Do not pause the audio to think. Type as the characters arrive, and if you miss one, type a placeholder and keep going — recovering from a miss mid-stream is a skill in itself. The Repeat button is there for review after you have committed an answer, not as a way to avoid committing one.
  6. Read the three result boxes. Expected shows what was sent, Typed shows what you entered, and Accuracy shows the percentage match for that group.
  7. Advance when the trainer says so. Once your accuracy holds above the Target Accuracy threshold (adjustable 70–100%, defaulting to 90%), the Advance button appears and a new character joins the set. Ninety percent is the traditional Koch gate and there is good reason not to lower it: advancing on shaky characters means every later lesson is built on a character you cannot actually hear.

Nothing you configure is lost when you close the tab. Your current lesson and group count persist in your browser, the Session panel shows both at a glance, and Export Data lets you take your progress record with you. Reset Progress clears the slate if you want to start the sequence over.

Character Speed vs Effective Speed: What the Numbers Mean

Farnsworth timing is the reason two speed sliders exist instead of one. Character speed determines the length of a dit: a dit lasts 1200 milliseconds divided by the words-per-minute figure. Effective speed determines how much silence sits between characters and between words, which is what actually governs how much thinking time you get.

These figures come from the standard Farnsworth calculation, which treats the word PARIS as 50 time units — 31 units of actual signal and 19 units of spacing. Total spacing time per word is 60/effective − 37.2/character seconds, split three-nineteenths between characters and seven-nineteenths between words. The practical takeaway is that dropping from 15 to 10 effective WPM nearly doubles your thinking time without making a single character sound different.

Reading the Lesson Map and the Accuracy Chart

A flat line in the 60–75% band usually means one specific character is failing rather than general weakness — go back through the Expected versus Typed boxes and you will normally find the same substitution repeating. Common Mistakes That Stall Koch Learners

Dropping character speed when a lesson gets hard. This converts the Koch method back into the chart method. If a lesson is too hard, lower the effective speed instead — more silence, same sounds.

Visualizing dots and dashes while listening. If you catch yourself picturing dash-dot-dash and then thinking “that’s K,” you are still running the lookup table. The fix is uncomfortable but simple: speed up the characters slightly so there is no time to visualize.

Training for an hour. Koch training is intense in a way that does not reward long sessions. Fifteen to twenty minutes daily beats two hours on Sunday by a wide margin, and the persistence in this tool exists precisely so short daily sessions are practical.

Advancing at 80%. The threshold is adjustable, and lowering it feels like progress. Two lessons later, the character you rushed past is the one poisoning every group.
